Profile

Penance is a young girl who has been held captive, tortured, and fed off of for most of her life. She managed to escape, with the help of Gateway, to the Generation X team, and stayed with them through the entire comic run. She is mute, but bright and curious.


She has been a weapon, and been incredibly good at it. She has killed, hunted, and existed in a perpetual state of fear. She is not, though a killer she does not enjoy harming others, but instead is incredibly capable of it. She prefers solitude to being near those who fear her, though yearns for, and enjoys the company of others. Given the chance, and safety, she is a calm, well balanced teenage girl.

Powers

Penance is a mutant with the internal pressure approaching that of a dwarf star. This has caused her skin to harden and pressurize to the point of diamond-like consistency. This pressure also influences light in her general vicinity, giving her a perpetual 'shadowed' appearance, though her overall coloring is crimson. Her physical makeup allows her to be immune to most physical damage, and to cut through nearly any substance, even those that Marvel heavy-hitter, Wolverine, cannot. She has hardened tendrils rather than fingers, which gives her incredibly long claws. The sharpest portions of her body are her hands, feet, and hair, though most will easily shred things at contact, leaving edges sharp enough to cut the unwary in any medium hard enough to retain edges.

She cannot 'turn off' this ability, and therefore leads her life being incredibly careful of the world, and especially, the people around her.

She is generally immune to psionic abilities, telepaths and the like get a reflective, mental garble that is prone to causing migraines at it's mildest. She can hear those speaking to her telepathically, but cannot respond.

Her unique mutation allows for a near limitless internal space. She has been used as a prison on numerous occasions, bodies being magically trapped within her own. When a foreign biology is introduced to her own, her body tries to cope by 'integrating' the new form. It leads to shortened hair and claws...as well as a time period of 'possession' where the intruder has control of Penny's body. This period does not usually last more than a day or two for weak willed intruders, a few weeks at most for strong willed. Her natural biology reasserts itself and her persona regains dominance, though the foreign mind is still present and can break through at times. She is also incredibly prone to 'possession' of any kind, and while she witnesses, and remembers, all acts while possessed, she cannot influence her own actions during the initial possession period.

Writer and Artist error

There is an occasion in comic when Penny speaks. This is not possible, as she has no vocal chords. Upon occasion though, a particularly strong possessing mind with abilities to manipulate vibrations or the like, can make it seem as if Penny speaks.

There are also instances where Penny is given yellow eyes rather than her blue, this is an artist error, and will be chalked up to a sign of initial possession as well.
